The Yale Symphony Orchestra (YSO) is a vibrant collegiate symphony orchestra at Yale University, founded in 1965 by students who wanted a larger ensemble to perform orchestral masterpieces. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the most respected youth orchestras in the United States, performing both classic symphonic repertoire and contemporary works, including commissions and premieres from emerging composers. The orchestra performs regularly in Yale's Woolsey Hall and tours internationally, offering its primarily undergraduate membership a unique opportunity to experience high-level orchestral playing alongside world-class soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Emmanuel Ax. The YSO is currently led by Music Director William Boughton, an acclaimed conductor known for his collaborations with major orchestras worldwide.
Notable for its adventurous programming, the YSO has delivered significant premieres including Bernstein’s *Mass* (European premiere), Charles Ives’ *Three Places in New England* (world premiere of the restored version), and works by Benjamin Britten and Debussy. Many of its student musicians go on to distinguished professional careers, and the orchestra’s commitment to performing new music remains a vital part of its mission. Its recordings, such as the complete Hindemith Piano Concertos, have received critical acclaim, showcasing the orchestra’s technical prowess and enthusiasm.
