Stilluppsteypa

Stilluppsteypa is an Icelandic experimental music group, initially formed in the early 1990s by Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson, Helgi Thorsson, and Heimir Björgúlfsson. The band's name, roughly translated as "Standing Up", plays on the image of starkness and resilience, aligning with their often austere and enigmatic soundscapes. The trio began with a more rock-oriented sound but quickly evolved into a group known for their blend of abstract electronics, ambient textures, and avant-garde approaches. Throughout the years, Stilluppsteypa has seen changes in its lineup, with Berg Sigmarsson and Thorsson remaining as the core members after Björgúlfsson's departure.

Their body of work is marked by a discography that emphasizes a penchant for the surreal and the unexpected. Albums like "Góða Nótt" and "Big Shadow Montana" weave together dark ambient sounds with field recordings and sparse noise, creating cinematic and often disorienting auditory experiences. "Space Finale" and "Passing Out" further explore these themes, delving into the cosmic and subconscious via droning electronics and eerie sonic manipulations. Known for their deep and brooding pieces, albums like "Second Childhood," "Drykkjuvísur Ohljódanna," and "Víkinga Brennivín" showcase Stilluppsteypa's talent for crafting immersive atmospheres that flirt with the minimalist and the chaotic. "ATAK003" indicates their commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, ensuring that Stilluppsteypa remains a compelling and unpredictable force in the experimental music scene.
