The Trans-Kalahari Quintet is an instrumental Afro-jazz ensemble that brings together musicians from the United States, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Formed in 2010, the group has evolved to include regular members and featured artists over the years. The quintet includes notable musicians such as saxophonist Matt Dacso, drummer Arthur "Makhwenkwe" Mengwe, guitarist Zakes Gwaze, bassist Brian Nyakurukwa, and electric pianist Lekofi Sejeso. Matt Dacso, a full-time physician, met his bandmates while working in Botswana, which led to the formation of this vibrant musical collaboration.
Their music is a fascinating fusion of jazz, funk, and South African cultural traditions. Albums like *The Long Journey Home* showcase their unique style, blending lively rhythms with soulful melodies.
