Jacobus Gallus, also known as Jacob Handl or Jacobus Handl-Gallus, was a late Renaissance composer of Slovene origin, active during the 16th century. Born in 1550 in what is now Slovenia, Gallus is best known for his sacred choral music that blends the polyphonic styles of the Franco-Flemish school with elements of the Venetian polychoral tradition. His most famous work is the "Opus musicum," a monumental collection of over 370 motets arranged according to the liturgical calendar.
Gallus’ music is deeply expressive and often features sophisticated, layered vocal textures, making him a favorite among choral ensembles interested in Renaissance repertoire. Though he traveled and worked throughout Central Europe—especially in places like Bohemia and Moravia—his compositions had a lasting impact on the development of sacred music across the region. Today, he’s remembered as one of the most significant Central European composers of the late Renaissance.
