The Civil Wars

The Civil Wars were an American folk duo composed of vocalist Joy Williams and guitarist John Paul White. The pair met during a songwriting session in Nashville in 2008 and quickly discovered a unique musical chemistry. They rose to fame with their 2009 digital album, "Live at Eddie's Attic," which showcased their captivating acoustic performance and harmonious vocals. The release of their 2011 debut studio album, "Barton Hollow," marked a critical and commercial breakthrough, earning them widespread acclaim and several awards, including two Grammys.

Characterized by their evocative storytelling and minimalist arrangements, The Civil Wars' music is a poignant blend of country, folk, and Americana influences. Their sophomore self-titled album, "The Civil Wars," was released in 2013 to critical success, winning another Grammy even amidst a period of personal discord that led to the hiatus and eventual break-up of the duo. Despite a relatively short tenure, The Civil Wars left an indelible mark on the music landscape with their hauntingly beautiful melodies and impactful songwriting, leaving fans with a rich albeit bittersweet discography that includes gems like "Poison & Wine" and the haunting cover of "You Are My Sunshine."
