Stephen O’Malley is an American guitarist and composer best known for co-founding the drone/doom metal band Sunn O))) and the experimental metal group Khanate. Renowned for his massive, sustained guitar tones and interest in volume as a physical, immersive experience, he’s been a key figure in bringing minimalist and drone ideas into heavy music.
Beyond his bands, O’Malley has worked widely across the experimental music world, collaborating with a range of artists and releasing solo and project-based recordings that often blur the lines between metal, noise, and contemporary composition. He’s also known for curating and contributing to cross-genre performances and recordings, consistently pushing heavy sound into new contexts.
