Paraf is a seminal punk rock and new wave band hailing from Rijeka, Croatia, originally formed in 1976. Integral to the former Yugoslav punk rock movement, the band left an indelible mark on the region's music scene with their raw, energetic sound and politically-charged lyrics. Over the years, Paraf navigated the evolution of punk into the new wave, undergoing several lineup changes, with vocalist and bassist Valter Kocijančić being a mainstay until his departure in 1990.
While their impact during the late '70s and '80s was most pronounced, with influential albums such as "A dan je tako lijepo počeo" (And the Day Started Out So Nicely) in 1980, and "Izleti" (Trips) in 1981, Paraf has enjoyed longevity through both reissues and live performances. Amidst a resurgence of interest in vintage punk, their recent releases like "Zastave" (Flags) (Live in Studio) and live versions of "Goli otok" (Barren Island) and "Želim biti vojnik" (I Want to be a Soldier) from 2022 cater to loyal fans and introduce their enduring sound to a new generation. Engaging with the contemporary moment while reflecting on their storied past, Paraf maintains their status as a cornerstone of the regional punk heritage, their music persisting as a soundtrack for defiance and dissent.
