Ustad Nainawaz, born Fazel Ahmad Zekrya, was a renowned Afghan artist, poet, and composer. He is often credited with revolutionizing Afghan music by incorporating modern pop elements, creating iconic pieces that have been sung by many famous Afghan artists, including Ahmad Zahir and Mahwash. His compositions often had a mystical quality, drawing inspiration from poets like Rumi and Hafez. Nainawaz was born in Kabul and graduated from Kabul University's Law and Political Faculty. He was a self-taught musician who began playing the accordion in his teens and went on to become a mentor to several notable musicians.
Nainawaz's life was marked by both artistic achievement and political activism. He participated in the Bala Hissar uprising against the Khalq communist regime in 1979 and was tragically executed that same year. Despite his untimely death, his legacy continues to inspire future generations with his joyful and mystical music. His adopted stage name "Nainawaz" means "Ney player" in Persian, reflecting his deep connection to traditional Afghan music and mysticism.
