Griller Quartet

The Griller Quartet was a hugely influential string quartet active from the 1920s through the 1960s. Founded by Sidney Griller, the group became renowned for their championing of contemporary composers, giving premieres of works by Benjamin Britten, Arnold Schoenberg, and Béla Bartók, among others. They were also known for their versatility, performing a wide range of repertoire from the classical canon and commissioning new works. Their dedication to exploring less-familiar music earned them a devoted following and helped expand the string quartet repertoire significantly.

Beyond their commitment to new music, the Grillers were also celebrated for their vibrant and expressive performances of established masterpieces. Their recordings, many of which have been reissued in recent years, showcase their technical brilliance and deep musical understanding. The quartet's legacy extends beyond their own performances; Sidney Griller went on to found the Griller String Quartet Competition, which continues to support and encourage young string quartets today.
