Bachir Attar

Bachir Attar is the leader of the Master Musicians of Jajouka, a group hailing from the village of Jajouka in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco. Born into the tradition, Attar inherited his role from his father, Hadj Abdesalam Attar, who led the group before him. The Master Musicians of Jajouka are known for their rich history and cultural significance, with roots that date back thousands of years. The ensemble's music is deeply spiritual and is said to derive from ancient ritualistic practices, traditionally performed to heal and to induce trance states.

Under Bachir Attar's leadership, the ensemble has achieved international recognition, with their mesmerizing blend of folk music traditions, Sufi trance rhythms, and avant-garde improvisation. They collaborate extensively with western musicians, leading to innovative fusions and the expansion of their audience. Among their noted recordings, albums like "The Next Dream" and "Apocalypse Live" exemplify their dynamic range and the enduring appeal of their centuries-old musical heritage. Attar himself is not only a custodian of an ancient musical lineage but also a creative force propelling the Master Musicians of Jajouka into contemporary relevance, ensuring that their hypnotic sounds continue to captivate listeners around the globe.
