Li Xiangting

Li Xiangting is a distinguished figure in the world of Chinese traditional music, particularly renowned for his mastery of the guqin (or qin), a seven-stringed zither with a history stretching back over 3000 years. Born in 1940, he is recognized as one of the foremost guqin players, educators, and scholars of his generation. His contributions to the revival and dissemination of guqin music have been pivotal, especially during a time when cultural traditions were at risk of being lost.

Throughout his career, Li Xiangting has produced a wealth of recordings that showcase the guqin's ethereal beauty and the depth of Chinese musical philosophy, among which "The Sound of Silk" and "Sleeping Lotus" are noted for their meditative and poetic qualities. His albums such as "Tao of Peace" and "Tao of Healing" reflect his dedication to the spiritual aspects of qin music, and how it can be used as a medium for tranquility and well-being. His scholarly and performance work, coupled with his participation in educational efforts, like that presented in "Chine, L'art Du Qin (The Art of the Qin)," not only preserves but also evolves the art form, bridging ancient traditions with contemporary interpretations and resonating with audiences worldwide.
