Black Marble is the synth-pop project of Los Angeles-based musician Chris Stewart. Drawing from the coldwave and post-punk sounds of the late '70s and early '80s, Black Marble blends moody analog synths, minimal rhythms, and introspective vocals to create a sound that's both nostalgic and emotionally resonant. The project began in Brooklyn, New York, with the release of its debut EP in 2012, and Stewart has since continued to evolve his sound while maintaining the lo-fi charm and shadowy aesthetics that first drew in fans of retro-futuristic synth music.
Since relocating to the West Coast, Stewart has released several acclaimed full-length albums, including It’s Immaterial (2016), Bigger Than Life (2019), and Fast Idol (2021). He’s also known for his covers of iconic tracks like “Johnny and Mary” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” reimagined through his uniquely atmospheric lens. With each release, Black Marble continues to deepen its exploration of nostalgia, melancholy, and texture, becoming a staple of the modern coldwave revival.
