Wayku is a musical project led by guitarist and researcher Percy A. Flores Navarro, originally from Tarapoto in the Peruvian Amazon. Emerging in late 2022 after his previous project Motilones de Tarapoto, Wayku blends Amazonian traditional music with rock, jazz, Brazilian influences, and tropical rhythms to create a fresh, electric sound known as "pandilla eléctrica." This music builds on the Amazon's rich cultural traditions, combining electric guitar, percussion, and traditional wind instruments with modern arrangements to explore new sonic textures while honoring Indigenous heritage and resistance.
Wayku's debut album, *Selva Selva* (2025), is a compelling journey through native Amazonian communities and contemporary urban realities. The album features 11 tracks that mix danceable beats with psychedelic rock and folk elements, weaving archived ethnographic sounds with live instruments. Songs like "Carnaval en la selva," "Por la marginal," and "Yanapuma" showcase the vibrant, evolving style that revives and expands electric pandilla music, empowering Amazonian voices on the global stage.
