Coupé Cloué

Coupé Cloué, born Jean Gesner Henry, was a legendary Haitian compas artist and bandleader who became a cultural icon with his infectious grooves and flamboyant personality. Active from the 1950s through the 1990s, he earned nicknames like "The King of Compas" for popularizing the dance-driven sound that defined Haiti’s party scene. Known for his raspy vocals, playful lyrics, and sharp-dressed stage presence, he blended traditional Haitian rhythms with upbeat horns and electric guitars, creating a style that felt both rooted and modern. Tracks like "Couci - Couca" and "Disque d’Or" became timeless anthems, while his charismatic live shows—often punctuated with humor and crowd interaction—cemented his status as a national treasure. Though he passed away in 1998, his music remains a staple at Haitian celebrations worldwide, proving that the "Coupé Cloué bounce" never goes out of style.
