Long Yu is a preeminent Chinese conductor who has risen to become one of the most significant figures in the classical music scene in China and internationally. Born in 1964, in Shanghai, Long Yu comes from a family with a rich musical heritage; his grandfather was the composer Ding Shande, and Yu received his professional training at the Shanghai Conservatory and later at the Hochschule der Künste (University of the Arts) in Berlin.
Long Yu's career is marked by his collaborations with numerous prestigious orchestras and his leadership in expanding the reach of classical music in China. He holds the distinction of being the Artistic Director of the Beijing Music Festival and the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the Music Director of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and the Chief Conductor of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. Long Yu has worked to bridge Eastern and Western musical traditions, often conducting works that blend both worlds, as seen in his recent release "Mahler & Ye: The Song of the Earth," which synthesizes Gustav Mahler’s composition with the Chinese composer Ye Xiaogang’s work.
