Michael Studer

Michael Studer was a Swiss pianist born on December 12, 1940, in Thun, Switzerland. He grew up in a musically inclined family, with his mother being a skilled pianist and his father working as a high school director. Studer began his piano training at the Bern Conservatory with Suzanne Eggli and later studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris under Yvonne Lefébure from 1960 to 1962. He refined his skills in Vienna with Richard Hauser and in masterclasses with Bruno Seidlhofer and Géza Anda. Notably, Michael Studer was the first winner of the 1962 Paris Conservatoire Piano Competition and received further accolades at the Grand Pembaur Competition in Bern and the Concours Musical International de Montréal.

Throughout his career, Studer frequently performed as a soloist at Swiss music festivals like the Festival Tibor Varga and the Lucerne Festival, collaborating with renowned conductors such as Charles Dutoit and Esa-Pekka Salonen. His recordings include works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, and Rachmaninoff, among others. His last recording was of Chopin's works, produced in 1999. Unfortunately, he had to retire from performing and teaching in 2001 due to a chronic hearing issue. In 2007, Claves Records released a six-CD collection titled "Michael Studer – The Legacy," featuring some of his best recordings. Michael Studer passed away on April 2, 2024, in Bern, Switzerland.
