Ron McClure is a highly respected American jazz bassist born on November 22, 1941, in New Haven, Connecticut. He began his musical journey at a young age, starting with piano and later moving on to accordion and bass. McClure studied music at the Hartt School of Music, graduating in 1963. Throughout his career, he has played with several influential jazz musicians and bands, including the Buddy Rich Sextet, Maynard Ferguson's big band, Herbie Mann, and the Wynton Kelly Trio. One of his most notable associations was with the Charles Lloyd Quartet, alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. McClure was also part of the jazz-rock group The Fourth Way and participated in performances with Blood, Sweat & Tears. He has continued to perform and record with numerous artists, showcasing his versatility in hard bop, jazz-rock, and free and bebop sessions.
In recent years, McClure has released records such as *Lucky Sunday*, part of his ongoing contributions to jazz. He is known for his rich discography as a leader and sideman, often collaborating with renowned musicians like John Scofield, John Abercrombie, and Randy Brecker.
