Julian Kytasty

Julian Kytasty is a renowned Ukrainian-American bandurist, composer, and ethnomusicologist, widely recognized for his mastery of the bandura—a traditional Ukrainian stringed instrument. Born into a family of Ukrainian émigré musicians, Kytasty has played a vital role in preserving and expanding the kobzar tradition of narrative, often epic-style folk music. Known for his deeply expressive performances, he bridges history and modernity through his interpretations of ancient songs, as well as his own innovative compositions.

Over the years, Julian Kytasty has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, both solo and in collaboration with artists across a variety of genres. His recordings, such as Night Songs from a Neighboring Village and Songs of Truth, reflect a deep knowledge of Ukrainian folk music and an expansive creative spirit. In addition to his performance work, he has also contributed to film and theater, and taught widely, helping to keep the heritage of the kobzar alive for new generations.
