DJ Screw

DJ Screw, born Robert Earl Davis Jr. on July 20, 1971, was a central figure in the Houston hip-hop scene and is best known as the creator of the "chopped and screwed" DJ technique. His slow-tempo and pitch-down method of remixing hip-hop tracks gave rise to a whole new subgenre within rap, affectionately called "screw music". DJ Screw began his journey in the music world during the late 1980s, but he rose to particular prominence in the 1990s with his mixtapes that featured his unique style of remixing.

Screw's legacy is inextricably linked to his Screw Tapes, a series of mixtapes that circulated through Houston and beyond, influencing the sound of Southern hip-hop. In the mid-1990s, he established the Screwed Up Click, a collective of rappers from Houston who worked with Screw and contributed to his tapes. Sadly, his influence was cut short when he passed away on November 16, 2000, at the age of 29, but not before leaving a lasting imprint on the musical landscape. DJ Screw’s posthumous releases, such as "3 ‘N the Mornin’ Mix, Pt. 1 / 3 ‘N the Mornin’ Mix, Pt. 2" and the special "3 ‘n the Mornin’ 20th Anniversary (Deluxe Edition)," along with a slew of chapters from his legendary "Diary of the Originator" including "Chapter 69 - Southside Riders" and "Chapter 195 - Fear No Man," have continued to solidify his role as an influential figure in hip-hop and ensure his revered status in the annals of music history.
