Jackie Mittoo

Jackie Mittoo was a legendary Jamaican keyboardist, composer, and producer who played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of reggae, ska, and rocksteady. Born in 1948 in Kingston, Jamaica, Mittoo was a child prodigy who began playing piano at a young age and quickly became a staple in the local music scene. He rose to fame in the 1960s as a founding member and musical director of the Skatalites, and later worked extensively with the iconic Studio One label, where he played on countless classic tracks and helped define the foundation of reggae music.

Mittoo's smooth organ and keyboard work can be heard on an array of crucial Jamaican recordings, and he was a key architect in the development of instrumental reggae. He also enjoyed a successful solo career with standout albums like "Showcase" and "Macka Fat," and continued to create and collaborate until his death in 1990. His influence remains deeply felt in reggae and beyond, with producers and musicians still sampling his grooves and celebrating his timeless sound.
