Rei Munakata is a Japanese-born conductor and composer known for his imaginative approach to modern classical music. Born in Yokohama and now based in Sweden, Munakata is celebrated for his experimental curiosity, meticulous craftsmanship, and musical fluidity. He leads and creates works for chamber musicians, ensembles, orchestras, and sound objects, collaborating internationally and receiving recognition such as second prize for "Pouring Etiquette" at the Via Nova International Composition Competition and selections for prominent festivals in Europe and the US. In addition to his conducting and composing, Munakata is a dedicated educator, frequently teaching workshops and masterclasses at music universities and conservatories.
Among his recent recorded work, Munakata conducted the Oslo Sinfonietta on "Chambered Music," showcasing his affinity for contemporary chamber music and innovative soundscapes.
