Voces del Bullerengue

**Voces del Bullerengue** is an Afro-Colombian women's musical collective deeply rooted in the ancestral traditions of bullerengue, a genre originating from the Caribbean region of Colombia. Their music centers on the voices of cantadoras—female singers—from rural villages near Montes de María and other communities, celebrating the legacy and resilience of Afro-Colombian women through traditional rhythms, drumming made from natural materials, and communal singing. In 2025, they released *#Anónimas&Resilientes*, an album that blends traditional songs with contemporary themes like herbal medicine and land rights, preserving the communal spirit and cultural memory through a 360° Ambisonics recording technique.

The group honors the slow, melancholic *Bullerengue Sentao* style alongside the faster, festive rhythms of *Chalupa* and *Fandango de Lengua*, connecting past and present through music that is both a history lesson and a vibrant celebration. Voces del Bullerengue continues the matrilineal tradition of bullerengue, a genre historically performed by women and passed down through generations, with figures like Fernanda Peña, Graciela Salgado, and Flor Marina Espitia influencing their sound and spirit.
