Lyn Collins

Lyn Collins, born Gloria Lavern Collins on June 12, 1948, in Lexington, Texas, was a potent force in funk and soul music, best known for her scorching work with the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, in the early 1970s. With a voice that could command the utmost attention - powerful, raw, and emotive - she earned the nickname "The Female Preacher" for her ability to deliver songs with sermon-like fervor. Collins' career began in the late 1960s where she sang in various clubs and worked with local bands, but it was her association with James Brown that catapulted her into the limelight.

Her most famous song, the funk classic "Think (About It)," released in 1972, remains a sample staple in hip-hop music, immortalized by the breakbeat-driven shout, "Woo! Yeah!" It has been sampled by countless artists, making it one of the most used breaks in hip-hop and dance music. Despite the fact that her discography is not extensive, Lyn Collins made a significant impact with her powerful performances and recordings, such as "Mama Feelgood," another favored track amongst fans and samplers alike, and "Check Me Out If You Don't Know Me By Now," which showcased her soulful depth. Over the years, her work has been reinterpreted and remixed by various artists, keeping her voice alive in contemporary music, as evidenced in the Safari Riot Remix of "Wheels of Life." Lyn Collins' passionate delivery and funky grooves have solidified her position as an enduring figure in the rich tapestry of soul and funk music. She passed away on March 13, 2005, but left behind a musical legacy that continues to inspire and move new generations of listeners and musicians.
