Henry Lawes was a 17th-century English composer, musician, and teacher. He was born in Dinton, Wiltshire, England, in 1596. He was a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral and later studied music with John Cooper. Lawes was a prolific composer, writing over 1,000 songs, as well as instrumental music and church music. He was also a skilled lutenist and singer. Lawes was a close friend of the poet John Milton, and he set many of Milton's poems to music. He also wrote music for the masques of Ben Jonson and other courtly entertainments. Lawes died in London in 1662.
