Shulamit Ran is a highly respected composer and educator known for her emotionally rich, expressive music that often weaves together lyrical intensity with bold modernist elements. Born in Israel in 1949, she moved to the United States as a teenager to study at the Mannes College of Music and went on to become a prominent voice in contemporary classical music. Ran has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1991 for her orchestral work "Symphony."
In addition to her compositional work, Ran has had a distinguished academic career, most notably at the University of Chicago, where she has served as a professor and head of the music department. She was also Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1990 to 1997. Her music has been widely performed around the world, and she remains an influential figure in modern classical music for her innovative yet deeply human approach to composition.
