Alam Lohar

Alam Lohar was a preeminent Pakistani folk singer who left a lasting mark on the music industry through his passionate renderings of Punjabi folk tales and Sufi spiritual songs. Born into a family of traditional musicians in 1928, in the small village of Achh in the Lalamusa District of Punjab, Alam developed a profound connection with the folk traditions of his region from an early age. He is often celebrated for popularizing the genre of Punjabi folk both nationally and internationally, and became widely acclaimed for his unique playing of the 'chimta' – a traditional percussion instrument.

Over the span of his career, Alam Lohar's soulful and dynamic vocal range captured the hearts of many, and his music continues to resonate deeply within the Punjabi community. His interpretation of "Jugni" - a folk song narrative that has been adapted by many South Asian artists, remains a timeless classic, showcasing his storytelling prowess. Alam passed away in 1979, but his legacy endures through a rich discography that includes tracks such as "Wiyah Kar Key Pachtaya" and "Mirza," as well as collaborative compilations like "Top 10 Sain Zahoor & Alam Lohar." His contribution to folk music not only preserves a cultural treasure but also influences contemporary artists and keeps the vibrant spirit of Punjabi folklore alive.
