Speedy Ortiz is an American indie rock band from Massachusetts, formed in 2011. The band started as a solo project by songwriter and guitarist Sadie Dupuis, who is known for her masterful blend of poetic lyrics and complex melodies. Dupuis, a former MFA poetry student, initially began the project as a way to showcase her personal musical compositions but soon expanded the lineup to include Mike Falcone on drums, Darl Ferm on bass, and Devin McKnight on guitar, who was later replaced by Andy Molholt.
Speedy Ortiz quickly made a name for themselves in the indie rock scene with their 2013 debut full-length album, "Major Arcana," which was hailed for its clever wordplay and angular guitar riffs. The album struck a chord with fans and critics alike, establishing the band's presence and leading to their recognition as a promising new force in the indie rock landscape. They followed this up with a series of successful releases that showcased their evolution in sound and songwriting, including "Real Hair" and "Foil Deer," the latter of which solidified their standing with its emotionally charged and sonically expansive tracks. Their most recent projects, such as the reflective "Twerp Verse," continue to delve into social and personal themes, reflecting Dupuis' nuanced approach to storytelling through music. Speedy Ortiz is recognized for their dynamic approach to music, embodying the DIY ethos with an intelligent, yet accessible, indie rock flair that has garnered a devoted following.
