Ira Gershwin was an American lyricist and librettist, best known for his collaborations with his brother, composer George Gershwin. Born in 1896 in New York City, Ira began writing lyrics in his early teens. He and George formed a songwriting partnership in 1918, and together they created some of the most iconic songs of the 20th century, including "I Got Rhythm," "Summertime," and "Embraceable You." Ira's witty and sophisticated lyrics perfectly complemented George's melodies, and their songs have been performed and recorded by countless artists over the years.
