Laco Déczi

Laco Déczi is a legendary Slovak jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader whose career has spanned over six decades, blending fiery improvisation with Central European folk influences. Born in 1938 in Šahy, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), this charismatic performer became a key figure in Eastern Europe’s jazz scene during the 1960s, even as political barriers limited international exposure. His band Jazz Celula New York, formed after he emigrated to the U.S. in the 1980s, became a bridge between American and European jazz traditions.
