Joy Kills Sorrow

Joy Kills Sorrow was an American string band that emerged in the late 2000s, acclaimed for their innovative blend of bluegrass, jazz, and indie pop. Formed in Boston, Massachusetts, the group was named after a WJKS, a radio station during the Great Depression that promised to uplift its listeners through tough times with music—a nod to the band's aim to bring comfort and joy through their songs. The band's lineup featured Emma Beaton's haunting vocals, which melded seamlessly with the virtuosic musicianship of Matthew Arcara on guitar, Jacob Jolliff on mandolin, Wesley Corbett on banjo, and Bridget Kearney on bass.

Their eponymous debut album "Joy Kills Sorrow" set the stage for a series of progressively ambitious records, showcasing the group's evolving sound. With the 2011 release of "Darkness Sure Becomes This City," their music became known for intricate arrangements and emotional depth, solidifying their standing in the modern folk scene. "This Unknown Science" followed in 2011, further exemplifying the group's tight harmonies and lyrical introspection. Their most recent release, "Wide Awake" in 2013, combined the band's familiar acoustic textures with pop sensibilities and a more electrifying energy. Despite their relatively short tenure—they disbanded in 2014—Joy Kills Sorrow left an indelible mark on the folk genre, as their discography remains a testament to their innovative contributions to Americana music.
