Wang Chung is an English new wave band that formed in the early 1980s, achieving success and recognition during that decade with their blend of pop hooks and polished production. Initially coming together under the name Huang Chung, the core duo of vocalist/guitarist Jack Hues and bassist Nick Feldman eventually changed the group's name to the more phonetically-friendly Wang Chung, ensuring broader appeal. Their unique moniker, derived from a phrase in Chinese (黃鐘, pronounced "huáng zhōng" in Mandarin), which means "yellow bell" in English, and represents the first note in the Chinese classical music scale.
Wang Chung's commercial breakthrough came with their 1984 album "Points on the Curve", which featured the hit single "Dance Hall Days". They further rose in fame with the release of the album "Mosaic" in 1986, which included arguably their most iconic track, "Everybody Have Fun Tonight", with its infectious chorus and the equally memorable directive to "Wang Chung tonight". Over the years, while navigating the changing tides of the music industry, they have maintained a dedicated fanbase and have continued to release new music and tour. Their more recent works such as "Tazer Up!" and "The Warmer Side Of Cool" have exhibited the band's evolution while staying true to their distinctive sound. In addition to their studio work, Wang Chung has experimented with symphonic arrangements of their hits, as seen with their 2019 release "Orchesography" and its instrumental version, adapting their classic tunes to an orchestral setting. This willingness to explore different musical terrains has ensured that Wang Chung remains a dynamic and resilient presence within the pop music scene.
