Sir Charles Thompson

Sir Charles Thompson was a swing and bebop pianist, organist, composer, and arranger who had a career spanning several decades. Born on March 21, 1918, in Springfield, Ohio, Thompson started his musical journey early, playing with Bennie Moten's band at private parties when he was just 12 years old. He got his nickname "Sir Charles" from jazz legend Lester Young and became known for his work with small groups, touring extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Thompson's style bridged the gap between swing and bebop, and he worked with many jazz greats throughout his career, including Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, and Buck Clayton. He's perhaps best known for composing the jazz standard "Robbin's Nest." Thompson continued performing well into his later years, living in Japan with his wife Makiko from 2002 until his death on June 16, 2016, at the age of 98.
