Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson

Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson is an Icelandic composer and performer known for his innovative approach to music. Born in 1982 in Reykjavík, he studied at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and later at Mills College in California, where he earned an M.A. degree with a thesis on rhythm. His music often eschews traditional rhythmic structures, instead using animated notation and digital methods to guide performances. This approach allows for a unique, pulse-free rhythmic language that emphasizes small differences in pitch and rhythm, encouraging a "microscopic mode of listening" among audiences. Guðmundur Steinn is also a founding member of the experimental arts collective S.L.Á.T.U.R. and co-curates the *Sláturtíð* festival and the *Jaðarber* concert series.

Guðmundur Steinn's work has been featured in numerous festivals and venues across Scandinavia and the U.S., including the MATA Festival, Time of Music, and the Reno Interdisciplinary Arts Festival. His compositions often involve experimental tuning and instrumentation, reflecting his interest in Icelandic folk music and his desire to break away from conventional musical grids. Recent releases include *Landvættirnar fjórar* and *Horpma*, showcasing his continued exploration of unconventional musical expressions. Through his collaborations with various ensembles and artists, Guðmundur Steinn continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music.
