John's Children was a quintessentially 1960s British proto-punk/psychedelic band, known for their flamboyant stage presence and controversial antics that often overshadowed their music. The group was formed in 1966 by vocalist Andy Ellison, guitarist Geoff McClelland, bassist John Hewlett, and drummer Chris Townson. Their energetic performances and provocative behavior quickly earned them a reputation as a cult act. Over time, McClelland was replaced by future T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan, whose tenure with the band, although short-lived, gave them a notable boost in their musical evolution.
Despite a fleeting existence and limited commercial success during their initial run, which lasted until 1968, John's Children left behind a legacy that inspired future punk and glam rock artists. Their sonic experiments and effervescent stage shows were encapsulated in a few releases, including their most famous single "Smashed Blocked." After their disbandment, the group went through various reformations and released several compilations and live albums. Notably, "The Legendary Orgasm Album" encapsulates their early work and influential sound. Despite never achieving mainstream fame, John's Children's influence can be seen in the bold styles and sounds that shaped rock music in the late '70s and beyond.
