CBC Vancouver Orchestra

The CBC Vancouver Orchestra, also known as the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra until 1980, was a prominent Canadian radio orchestra founded in 1938 by Ira Dilworth. John Avison was appointed as its first conductor and led the orchestra until his retirement in 1980. During its active years, the orchestra was known for premiering over 200 works by Canadian composers and performing a wide range of repertoire, including baroque, classical, and contemporary music. The orchestra toured extensively across western Canada, the Arctic, the USA, and as far east as Ottawa. After Avison, notable conductors included John Eliot Gardiner and Mario Bernardi, who further expanded the orchestra's musical scope.

The orchestra's legacy includes collaborations with many leading Canadian concert artists and guest conductors. It was also recognized for its contributions to contemporary music, receiving a commendation from the ISCM in 1960. Despite its rich history, the CBC Vancouver Orchestra's activities eventually diminished, but its impact on Canadian musical heritage remains significant.
