Lonnie Donegan

Lonnie Donegan was a hugely influential British singer, songwriter, and musician, often called the "King of Skiffle." Rising to fame in the 1950s, he played a major part in popularizing skiffle music—a lively blend of jazz, blues, folk, and American folk influences—across the UK. His breakthrough came with a hit version of "Rock Island Line," which sparked a nationwide craze for skiffle and inspired countless young musicians, including future legends like The Beatles.

Donegan scored several hits throughout the '50s and '60s, with songs like "My Old Man's a Dustman" and "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor (On the Bedpost Overnight?)." His energetic performances and DIY spirit helped lay the groundwork for the British rock boom of the 1960s. Even beyond his chart successes, Lonnie Donegan's legacy lives on as a major catalyst for an entire generation of British pop and rock stars.
