Marcus Roberts

Marcus Roberts is a renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and educator who has made significant contributions to the jazz world since the 1980s. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Roberts lost his sight at age five but began teaching himself piano shortly after. He gained prominence in the jazz scene when he joined Wynton Marsalis's band in the 1980s, replacing Kenny Kirkland.

Roberts is known for his unique approach to jazz piano, drawing inspiration from early jazz pianists like Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. He has released numerous critically acclaimed albums, including "The Truth Is Spoken Here" and "Deep in the Shed". Roberts is also recognized for his work in blending jazz and classical music, having performed with symphony orchestras worldwide and premiering his own piano concerto, "Spirit of the Blues: Piano Concerto in C Minor," in 2013. As a professor at Florida State University, Roberts continues to influence the next generation of jazz musicians.
