Nico Van Der Meel

Nico van der Meel is a Dutch tenor born in 1956 in The Hague, known particularly for his expertise in Baroque music and his deep involvement with the works of J.S. Bach. He began his career after shifting from mathematics studies at Leiden University to music, studying choral conducting before focusing on singing with Margreet Honig. Van der Meel made his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 1987/1988 season and quickly established himself as a renowned interpreter of Bach’s sacred cantatas and Passions, collaborating with prominent conductors such as Sigiswald Kuijken, Frans Brüggen, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and John Eliot Gardiner. His recordings include extensive work on Bach’s Mass in B minor, St. John Passion, and St. Matthew Passion, and he has performed in a variety of operatic roles spanning composers from Johann Strauss to Mozart and Stravinsky.

Beyond performing, Nico van der Meel also conducts, leading ensembles such as the William Byrd Vocal Ensemble, which focuses on a cappella music from the Renaissance to the 20th century. His career is marked by not only his mastery of the Evangelist role in Bach’s Passions but also his broad concert repertoire that spans several centuries of music, making him a versatile and respected figure in classical vocal music.
