Ernesto Joaquim Maria dos Santos, better known as Donga, was a Brazilian guitarist and composer born in 1890 in Rio de Janeiro. He's most famous for composing "Pelo Telefone" in 1916, which is widely considered the first recorded samba song. Donga was a key figure in early Brazilian popular music, participating in the musical gatherings at Tia Ciata's house alongside other influential musicians like Pixinguinha.
In 1919, Donga joined the group Oito Batutas, which toured Europe in 1922. He continued to be active in Brazilian music throughout his life, recording compositions for various projects including a 1940 album of Brazilian music organized by conductors Leopold Stokowski and Heitor Villa-Lobos. Donga passed away in 1974, leaving behind a legacy as one of the pioneers of samba and Brazilian popular music.
