The Maytals

The Maytals, later known as Toots and the Maytals, are one of the most influential and beloved groups in Jamaican music history. Formed in the early 1960s, the band was centered around the powerful, soulful vocals of Frederick "Toots" Hibbert. They played a major role in popularizing reggae and ska music around the world, and are often credited with giving the genre its name—their 1968 hit "Do the Reggay" is widely recognized as the first song to use the word "reggae."

Known for their high-energy performances and a sound that blended gospel, soul, ska, rocksteady, and reggae, Toots and the Maytals delivered hits like "Pressure Drop," "Monkey Man," and "54-46 That's My Number." Their music has influenced countless artists across genres and decades. With catchy melodies, deep grooves, and Hibbert’s unmistakable voice, The Maytals left an enduring legacy that continues to resonate with fans around the world.
