Cartoons, also known as Cartoons DK, are a Danish Eurodance band with a distinctive animated "bubblegum" pop sound, style, and presentation that captured the attention of both the young and the young-at-heart during the late 90s and early 2000s. Their music is often characterized by upbeat tempos, catchy hooks, and whimsical lyrics, often revisiting classic tunes with a contemporary, high-energy dance beat. The band members were known for their cartoonish aesthetics, performing in colorful costumes, wigs, and large glasses that contributed to their animated caricature personas, making them a memorable addition to the wave of novelty bands popular at that time.
The group soared in popularity with their highly infectious cover of "Witch Doctor," originally a hit for David Seville in 1958, which they released as a single along with "Doodah" from their debut album, "Toonage," in 1998. The band's debut was an instant success across Europe and beyond. As they progressed in their career, the Cartoons continued to release music that celebrated a toon-themed party atmosphere. With albums like "More Toonage" and "Toontastic," as well as their later releases such as "Big Coconuts" and "Doodah 2k23," they displayed their ability to maintain the infectious, lighthearted spirit that initially catapulted them into the limelight. Although their novelty appeal might have seen them labeled as a gimmick act, Cartoons left an indelible mark on the turn-of-the-century pop culture scene with their family-friendly dance tracks and their uniquely visual performance style.
