Buddy Tate

Buddy Tate was a legendary jazz saxophonist and clarinetist who made his mark on the swing era. Born George Holmes Tate in Sherman, Texas in 1913, he rose to prominence as a member of Count Basie's Orchestra, joining in 1939 and staying until 1948. Tate's rich, bluesy tenor sax sound became a defining element of the Basie band's style during his tenure.

After his time with Basie, Tate found success leading his own band at Harlem's Celebrity Club from 1953 to 1974. He continued to perform and record well into his later years, collaborating with other jazz greats and maintaining a devoted following. Tate's career spanned several decades, showcasing his versatility across various jazz styles and cementing his status as one of the great "Texas Tenors" in jazz history.
