Luis de Milán

Luis de Milán (also known as Luys Milan) was a Renaissance composer, vihuelist (a performer on the vihuela, a guitar-like instrument), and writer from the Kingdom of Valencia, part of present-day Spain. Born around 1500 and believed to have died by 1561, Milán is most renowned for his work "El Maestro" (1536), which is recognized as the first collection of vihuela music ever printed. This landmark publication contains a variety of compositions including fantasias, pavanes, and songs known as "villancicos", highlighting his proficiency both as a musician and a composer.

His contributions to the realm of music were pivotal in the dissemination and promotion of the vihuela during the 16th century. Milán's writing not only offered insight into the performance practices of the time but also represented a significant portion of the early repertoire for the instrument. His music, characterized by its melodic beauty and intricate counterpoint, continues to be celebrated and performed today, as evinced by several releases that bring his compositions to contemporary audiences. These recent releases, such as "Greatest Guitar Classics, Vol. 3," "Luys Milan: Fantaisie 15," and "Milan, L.: Vihuela Music" indicate a sustained interest in and appreciation for his work and its place in the canon of early Western art music.
