Lucine Amara

Lucine Amara was an American operatic soprano whose crystal-clear voice and artistic versatility made her a beloved fixture at New York’s Metropolitan Opera for over four decades. Born Lucine Armaganian in 1924 (later simplifying her stage name), she grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, and joined the Met in 1950, debuting as the High Priestess in *Aida*. Known for her warm lyric soprano and impeccable technique, she became a dependable star in roles like Mimì in *La Bohème*, Micaëla in *Carmen*, and Pamina in *The Magic Flute*—all featured in the live recordings you listed. Though she often shone in secondary roles, her professionalism and longevity (she retired in 1991!) earned her legendary status among opera buffs. Amara also performed internationally but remained a Met loyalist, clocking over 900 performances. She passed away in 2021 at age 97, leaving a legacy of recordings that capture her elegant, heartfelt artistry.
