Initially, they were joined by bassist Kenji Ueda, who later left due to disagreements. The band's name is inspired by a record titled "Pillows & Prayers" owned by Manabe. They are known for their energetic performances and melodic craftsmanship, with an extensive discography that includes 22 studio albums and numerous singles and EPs. The pillows have been influential in the music scene, especially noted for their work on the soundtracks for the anime series "FLCL."

Throughout their career, the pillows have maintained a prolific release schedule, experimenting with various genres and styles.
