Hosein Tehrani is widely regarded as the father of modern tombak playing in Persian classical music. Born in 1912 in Tehran, Iran, Tehrani revolutionized the role of the tombak (also known as zarb), the principal percussion instrument in traditional Iranian music, elevating it from a simple timekeeping device to a fully expressive, soloistic instrument. He developed new techniques and rhythmic patterns that expanded the tombak’s expressive range, influencing generations of percussionists.
Throughout his career, Hosein Tehrani performed alongside some of Iran’s most respected classical musicians and also played a key role in establishing percussion instruction at Tehran’s National Conservatory. His recordings remain key references for students and enthusiasts of Iranian music. His legacy lives on through his students and the enduring evolution of tombak performance in Persian classical tradition.
