Richard Watkins

**Richard Watkins** is one of Britain’s most celebrated classical horn players, known for his rich tone and expressive performances. Born in 1958, he trained at the Royal Academy of Music and quickly rose to prominence as a soloist and chamber musician. His career spans orchestral work (including roles with the Royal Philharmonic and Philip Jones Brass Ensemble), collaborations with leading composers like Edward Gregson and Simon Bainbridge, and a passion for premiering new works. A champion of the horn’s versatility, he’s equally at home in Romantic concertos, contemporary pieces (like the haunting *Sea Eagle*), and iconic repertoire such as Britten’s *Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings*.

When he’s not performing, Watkins shares his expertise as a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, mentoring the next generation of horn players. His recordings—like *The Romantic Horn* and *Barton & Wright: Orchestral Works*—showcase his lyrical phrasing and technical brilliance. A lifelong advocate for the instrument, he was appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2014 for his contributions to music. Casual listeners and horn enthusiasts alike admire his ability to make the instrument “sing” in every genre he touches.
