His mother, a classical violinist, performed solo at Carnegie Hall at the age of ten, which likely contributed to his early exposure to music. Marks' musical journey began in the 1970s as a folk and jazz artist, and he later transitioned to rock in the 1980s and 1990s, becoming known for his unique and sophisticated songwriting style in the San Francisco Bay Area.
