Claudio Scimone

Claudio Scimone was a distinguished Italian conductor best known for his deep passion for Baroque and Classical music, and for his work in reviving long-forgotten masterpieces. Born in Padua in 1934, Scimone founded the ensemble I Solisti Veneti in 1959, which became internationally renowned for its vibrant and historically informed performances of Italian instrumental works. Under his direction, the group brought renewed attention to composers like Vivaldi, Albinoni, Tartini, and others from Italy’s rich musical past.

Scimone’s recordings span a vast repertoire, including celebrated interpretations of Vivaldi’s operatic overtures and concertos, the festive “Christmas Concertos” by various Baroque composers, and even rediscovered works by Salieri and Pergolesi. His scholarly approach and expressive conducting helped breathe new life into early music, and his contributions earned him numerous awards and honors throughout his career. Claudio Scimone passed away in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of exquisite recordings and a lasting impact on the world of classical music.
