Aqua is a Danish-Norwegian Eurodance group best known for their playful, catchy tunes and a whimsical approach to pop music. Established in 1996, the group consists of members Lene Nystrøm Rasted, René Dif, Søren Rasted, and Claus Norreen. They catapulted to international fame with the release of their 1997 breakout single "Barbie Girl," which was a satirical commentary on the Barbie doll phenomenon. The song became a global hit, defining the distinctive sound of late 90s Europop with its infectious rhythm and memorable lyrics.
The band's debut album, "Aquarium" (1997), which included "Barbie Girl," also housed other hits like "Doctor Jones," "Turn Back Time," and "Lollipop (Candyman)," cementing Aqua's place in music history. Their follow-up album "Aquarius" (2000) produced hits such as "Cartoon Heroes" and "Around the World," but the group disbanded in 2001, only to reunite in 2007. Since then, they have released additional music, toured, and continued to enjoy a loyal fan base nostalgic for their unique brand of bubblegum dance-pop. Their legacy includes an energetic sound that has attracted remix attention, as evidenced by the likes of Tiësto remixing "Barbie Girl", and culturally, they have left an imprint with their anthem "I Am What I Am" for Copenhagen 2021 WorldPride, underscoring their commitment to celebrating individuality and freedom of expression.
